The National Institute of Technology which was formerly known as Regional Engineering College Tiruchirappalli, it is situated in the heart of Tamil Nadu on the banks of river Cauvery, was established as a joint and co-operative venture of the Government of India and the Government of Tamil Nadu in 1964 with a view to catering to the needs of man-power in technology for the country. The college has been conferred with autonomy in financial and administrative matters to achieve rapid development. Because of this rich experience, this institution was granted Deemed University.
The main eye-catch of the campus lies in the OCTAGON - Computer Center is the landmark of this campus. This center serves the campus-wide LAN in close association with the user departments. This LAN caters to totally 6000 users over the campus and also has a 10 Gbps fiber optic backbone. It also acts as a resource centre to supplement classroom instructions with laboratory sessions.
The Institute has a modern Central Library with more than two lakh of documents consisting of Technical books, reports, standards, CD-ROMS, Audio Visual Educational Cassettes and back volumes of journals also.
NIT Tiruchirappalli is one among the 20 NITs and this institution was granted Deemed University Status with the approval of the UGC/AICTE and Govt. of India in the year 2003 and renamed as National Institute of Technology.
The fee structure of the college- for general it ranges upto Rs 21,850 and for other backward caste its Rs.4,850/-annually.
Over 160 companies participate in the placement process every year and recruit students. The average compensation during the current year is over Rs. 4.75 lakh with the highest being $125,000 per annum. The institute enjoys best placements when it comes to PG programmes.
