1. Supreme Court bans sale of crackers in Delhi

 

·        The sale of firecrackers in Delhi and NCR is banned by the Supreme Court till November 1, 2017.

·        This step is taken for the health of the citizens.

·        The judgement if Supreme Court came on the petitions challenging the 12th September modification of the November 2016 ban on sale of firecrackers in Delhi.

·        Last year, the air quality in Delhi deteriorated and choked the city which led to closing of schools.

·        Sulphur from firecrackers on combustion produces sulphur-dioxide which is very harmful for health.

·        Various efforts are made by the government, media and civil society every year for creating awareness of the harms of bursting firecrackers.

2. Noble Prize in Economics

 

·        Richard H. Tholer won the Noble prize 2017 for economics.

·        He is awarded noble prize “for his contributions to the field of behavioural economics”.

·        He is also known as the founding father of behavioural economics.

·        Presently, he is a professor at the Chicago Booth School of Business.

·        He is popular for his “nudge theory” as for personally prodding people towards rational decision making.

·        He wrote many books and he autograph every single copy of his famed book,  Nudge: Improving Decisions about health ,wealth and happiness with the words: “Nudge for Good”.

3. Star-crossed Don Quixote actor Rochefort is dead

 

·        Jean Rochefort, the French actor played many prominent roles in Hollywood movies.

·        He died aged 87.

4. India goes down fighting against Colombia

 

·        Colombia beat India by 2-1 in FIFA Under-17 World Cup at the Jawahar Lal Nehru Stadium.

·        In other match US beat Ghana by 1-0.

5. Petroleum Products in ambit of GST

 

·        The Union government will consult to the states for bringing petroleum products into the ambit of the Goods and Services Tax (GST).

·        Petroleum products are now facing a high central and state levies.

·        Presently, the centre levies an excise duty of Rs 19.48 per litre on petrol and state levy VAT from 6-48%.

·        Currently, petrol, diesel, natural gas and alcohol are outside GST.

6. Rohingya are infiltrators: ICHR note

 

·        A seminar to flesh out the difference between “refugees” and “illegal infiltrators” was organised by the Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR).

·        According to this seminar Rohingya Muslims are an example of “Illegal Infiltrators”.

·        Refugees for India: Victims of religio-ethnic cleansing form the neighbouring countries which were part of eternal Bharat since time immemorial but got separated from India in 1947, are entitled to shelter and rehabilitation in India.
