 1.    All about Thalassemia

• Thalassemia is an inherited chronic blood disorder.

• In this disease a patient cannot make enough haemoglobin found in Red Blood Cells (RBCs).

• In India approx 40 million carriers of Thalassemia and over 1 lakh Thalassemia majors go for blood transfusion every month.


2.    Steve Plain climbed seven peak summits in 117 days

• Steve Plain of Australia has broken the earlier record of 126 days by travelling the highest peaks of world in just 117 days.

• He started his expedition from Antarctica in January this year and climbed Mount Vinson the highest peak of Antarctica followed by highest peaks of all other continents.

• He reached at the highest peaks of continents- Mt. Kilimanjaro of Africa, Mt. Aconcagua of South America, Mt. Elbrus of Europe, Mt. Denali of North America, Mt. Carstensz Pyramid in Papua New Guinea which covers Australia and Oceania.

• He completed his expedition by climbing Mount Everest.


3.    Article 35A will be heard by Constitution Bench

• The five judge Constitution Bench will decide whether special status granted to Jammu and Kashmir is unconstitutional.

• Under article 35A gives rights to the state legislature of Jammu and Kashmir to decide who all are the “permanent residents” of the state and grant them special rights and privileges in public sector jobs, acquisition of property within the state, scholarships and other public aid and welfare programs.

• The petition against the article 35A and 370 of the Constitution was filed by a NGO which says that these two articles are against the very spirit of oneness of India.


4.    BIMSTEC Summit 2018 in Nepal

• Nepal will host the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sector Technical and Economic cooperation (BIMSTEC) Summit 2018.

• BIMSTEC is a sub-regional group of seven countries- Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Nepal and Bhutan.

• It was established in 1997 by Bangkok Declaration and has headquartered in Dhaka.


5.    China first Indigenous aircraft carrier on sea trial

• China’s first indigenous aircraft carrier Type 001A started sea trials from Dalian port in Liaoning province.

• It will be officially launched after testing engine, propulsion and navigation systems.

• It is 315 metres long with displacement capacity of about 55000 tonnes (70000 loaded).
