1.The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, attended the National Women Livelihood Meet-2019,held at Deendayal Hastkala Sankul in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, on International Women’s Day.

  • The Prime Minister visited the exhibition on products manufactured by Self Help Groups aided by Uttar Pradesh Rural Livelihood Mission. He distributed Electric Chaak, Solar Charkha and Honey Warp to women beneficiaries and appreciation letters to five women Self Help Groups. Various women Self Help Groups supported by Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana, NRLM-Uttar Pradesh, handed over a cheque of Rs.21 lakh to the Prime Minister,as their contribution towards ‘Bharat Ke Veer’ Fund.

2.Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Suresh Prabhu, launched a tutorial video on “Intellectual Property Rights” for school students and the GI website in New Delhi.

  • The tutorial video is available on CIPAM’s Youtube Channel and will form part of the existing resource pool on CIPAM’s official website www.cipam.gov.in which is freely available for public.

3.Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled the new series of visually impaired friendly coins of in the denominations of Re 1, Rs 2, Rs 5, Rs 10 and Rs 20 at an event held in New Delhi where visually impaired children were specially invited. All the new series coins will be issued for circulation only through the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in terms of the RBI Act.

  • New Rs 20 coin is in polygon shape of 12 edges with a design of grains denoting the agricultural dominance of the country.
  • The outer ring the new 20 rupee coin is made up of nickel silver and the central piece is made of nickel brass. The outside diameter of the new Rs 20 coin is 2.7 centimetres and the weight of the new Rs 20 coin is about 8.54 grams.
  • The ‘Lion Capital of Ashoka Pillar’ is minted on the face of new 20 rupee coin with ‘Satyamev Jayate’ inscribed below it and, while, the denomination value of 20 is minted in international numerals along with the Indian Rupee symbol on the reverse side of the new 20 rupee coin. ‘Bharat’ in Hindi and ‘India’ in English is minted on the left and right periphery on the face of new Rs 20 coin and the year of minting is inscribed on the centre of left periphery of the new 20 rupee coin in international numerals, such as ‘2019’.
  • The coins are designed by the National Institute of Design and minted at state-owned mints at Mumbai, Alipore (Kolkata),Saifabad (Hyderabad), Cherlapally (Hyderabad) and Noida (U.P.).

4.Directorate General of Mines Safety (DGMS) signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Safety in Mines, Testing and Research Station (SIMTARS), Australia for cooperation in occupational safety.

  • The MoU was signed between Shri Utpal Singh on behalf of Ministry of Labour and Employment and Shri Gitesh Agrawal on behalf of SIMTARS, Australia.

  • The aim of MoU was to explore new opportunities in the area of occupational safety, health and welfare of persons engaged in mining operations.

5.The Union Cabinet, chaired by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) and Civil Service Council of Mongolia (CSCM) aimed at strengthening the existing relationship between them.


6.West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee launched a new scheme called Yuvashree Plan II or Yuvashree Arpan under which 50,000 youths will receive financial assistance of Rs 1 lakh for setting up an their own business initiatives.


7.Hardeep S Puri, Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs launched e-Dharti App to make all the three modules – Conversion, Substitution and Mutation online.

                        Awards and Recognition

8.The Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA) in Bhubaneswar won the Airport Service Quality (ASQ) award for being the best airport in size and region (2-5 million passengers in Asia-Pacific) for the year 2018.


                   Appointment and Resignation

9.The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved designating Shri Subhash Chandra Garg, Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance as Finance Secretary.

10.Ministry of Railways has appointed Shri S.S.Srinivas as Officer on Special Duty (OSD), South Coast Railway. Prior to this assignment, Shri Srinivas, an Indian Railways Personnel Service (IRPS) officer, was working as Chief Personnel Officer (Administration), South Central Railway.

11.Soumya Swaminathan who is currently a Deputy Director-General of the World Health Organisation (WHO) has been appointed as the Chief Scientist of the World Health Organisation (WHO).

12.“Sabka Saath Sabka Vikas”, a compilation of selected speeches of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, was released by Shri Arun Jaitley, Union Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs in a function organized by Ministry of Information & Broadcasting at National Media Centre, New Delhi.

13.The International Women’s Day was observed on 8th March 2019. The theme for this year is Think equal, build smart, innovate for change.

14.The 21st Lt Governor of Puducherry and former Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) chief,  Virendra Kataria, passed away at the age of 88 years.


                                  Sports
15.Iniyan Panneerselvam from Tamil Nadu, won the Noisiel Open in France by defeating GM (Grand Master) Sergey Fedorchuk of Ukraine in the sixth round and became the 61st Grandmaster for India crossing 2500 points in ELO ratings.
