1.This is the first time in Independent India that such a large number of women MPs are sitting in Parliament.

  • The 17th Lok Sabha will have the highest number i.e. 78 of women members. They will make up 14.4% of the strength of the Lower House an increase from the 12.5% (65) in the previous Lok Sabha.

2.US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have agreed to meet at the G-20 Summit in Japan as both the leaders pledged to further strengthen the US-India strategic partnership and build on the achievements of the last two years.

  • The leaders look forward to seeing one another at the G-20 Summit in Osaka, where the US, India, and Japan will hold a trilateral meeting to pursue their shared vision for a free and open Indo-Pacific.

3.India should cut interest rates further and adopt consistent policies for the export of agricultural produce to enable Indian exporters to take advantage of the current US-China trade war.

  • In a business trip to China,FICCI president Sandip Somany said the NDA government in its second term should focus on getting big ticket investments from China, specially in the capital goods sector, and motivate Chinese machinery manufacturers to set up plants in India.
  • The escalating US-China trade war, under which both countries have slapped billions of dollars worth of tariffs on each other's exports, offers a big opportunity for some category of Indian exports to make a dent in both the US and Chinese markets.

4.The district court at Tis Hazari Courts Complex launched an e-filing facility for arbitration matters, litigants and advocates will now be able to file their cases anytime from anywhere.

  • A new homepage for the court's website and a new software for its mediation centre was also launched.
  • The new e-filing feature would help lawyers or litigants to file cases online and keep a track of the already filed ones. The arbitration cases can be filed online at anytime at the web portal

5.The government has approved the merger of National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) with the Central Statistics Office (CSO) under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI).

  • The restructuring is in line with the proposed National Policy on Official Statistics which was done last year.
  • The policy suggests discontinuing with the role of the Chief Statistician of India as secretary to the National Statistical Commission (NSC) and doing away with the usage of the terms CSO and NSSO,the two will be treated as being under a single entity called the National Statistical Organisation (NSO).
  • The policy is based on a 2005 decision in the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government’s tenure, following the recommendations of the report of the National Statistical Commission, headed by former Reserve Bank of India governor C Rangarajan.

6.Corporation Bank has launched ‘Corp SME Suvidha’, a product for GST-registered MSMEs.

  • The product has been designed as part of the bank's efforts to provide best products to MSME sector.
  • PV Bharathi, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the bank, launched the product in Mangaluru in the presence of Gopal Murli Bhagat, Executive Director , and general managers.

7.Cyril Ramaphosa took the oath as President of South Africa at a colourful ceremony, vowing “a new era” amid expectations that he will revive the economy and fight corruption.

8.Parasite, a suspenseful dark comedy about class struggles directed by South Korea’s Bong Joon Ho, won the top Palme d’Or prize at the Cannes Film Festival.


9.A former village head Surendra Singh, known to be close to the newly elected BJP MP Smriti Irani, was shot dead in Baraulia village in Uttar Pradesh's Amethi district.

10.Vijaya Mulay, a pioneering figure in the world of education and films passed away.

  • She helmed a short educational animation film, which was released by the Films Division of India in 1974, she wove in a tale that presented innovative ways of learning numerals and alphabets.

                           Important Days

11.The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) will organise ‘Raahgiri Day’ on 26th May at inner circle of Connaught Place, in which people can participate in various recreational activities.

  • ‘Raahgiri Day’ began in Gurugram on November 17, 2013, and has now spread over 70 cities and 19 States across the country. Over 1.2 crore people have participated in various activities in the last five and half years.
  • The aim is to create awareness about road safety, promoting cycling, walking and use of public transport as envisaged in the National Urban transport policy, encouraging physical activities to promote healthy living and above all, it would support the idea of city development.


12.Star striker Neymar will join Brazil's Copa America squad for training.

  • Neymar had been expected to arrive on May 28, six days after Brazil began preparations for the tournament.


13.Barcelona wanted a trophy to ease their Champions League but failed and defeated as Valencia pulled off a thrilling 2-1 victory to win a Copa del Rey.
