1.Top private sector lenders have cut interest rates on deposits by up to 0.25% over the last week.

  • An interest rate cut in deposits is seen as a precursor to a lending rate cut. The move by ICICI Bank and Axis Bank comes amid easing liquidity conditions and also within days of a rate cut by the Reserve Bank.

2.India for the first time will host the 14th session of the Conference of Parties (COP­14) of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) in September.  

  • It will see participation from at least 5,000 delegates from nearly 197 countries and will be held between September 2 and 14 in Delhi.
  • Ahead of the COP­14, Mr. Javadekar launched a flagship project, part of a larger international initiative called the Bonn Challenge, to enhance India’s capacity for forest landscape restoration (FLR).

3.IT firm Tech Mahindra said it would acquire Canada based Objectwise Consulting Group Inc. worth 2.75 million Canadian dollars (about ₹14.33 crore).

  • The investment committee of the board of directors has approved the proposal to acquire 100% equity shares of Objectwise Consulting Group Inc. through a new entity to be formed under its wholly ­owned subsidiary viz, Tech Mahindra (Americas) Inc.  

4.In a bid to promote Sanskrit, the Uttar Pradesh government will now issue press releases in Sanskrit along with Hindi, English and Urdu.

  • The first press note in Sanskrit was issued by the state government's Information Department.

  • Senior officials of the Information Department said the important speeches of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and government information will be released also in Sanskrit, along with Hindi, English and Urdu.
  • The department has decided to take help of Lucknow-based Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan for translating chief minister's speeches for public release.

5.The BJP’s parliamentary board, in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, declared former Union Minister J.P. Nadda the party’s working president, after the incumbent Amit Shah joined the Union Cabinet.

6.Chinese smartphone player OPPO announced that the brand has secured third spot in the most trusted smartphone brand in India, according to a report by Mumbai-based analytics firm Trust Research Advisory (TRA).

  • According to TRA's Brand Trust Report 2019, OPPO climbed up seven ranks to secure this year's third spot in the top 10 smartphone brands in India.

7.After Guwahati and Imphal, the Agartala airport is set to become the third international airport in the northeastern region by the end of this year or by early 2020.

  • The Airport Authority of India (AAI) has informed us that their ongoing works to make Agartala's Maharaja Bir Bikram (MBB) Airport as an international one would be completed by this year end. But if the works are hampered due to the monsoon season or any other factor, then the declaration would be made by early 2020

9.Autistic Pride Day, originally Aspies for Freedom initiative, is a pride celebration for autistics held on 18 June each year.

  • Autistic pride recognises the importance of pride for autistics and its role in bringing about positive changes in the broader society.
  • The organisations around the world celebrate Autistic Pride Day to connect with one another through autistic events and demonstrate to allistic people that autistic people are unique individuals who should not be seen as cases for treatment.

10.Gary Woodland won the 119th US Open, capturing his first Major title with a 13 ­under total to deny two­ time defending champion Brook Koepka's bid for history.


11.France's Caroline Garcia claimed her first title of 2019 by holding off Donna Vekic to win the Nottingham Open.

  • Garcia needed to polish off her semifinal against American Jennifer Brady in the morning after the rain played havoc with the schedule.

12.Naomi Osaka retained top place in the WTA rankings in an unchanged top 20 with two weeks to go to Wimbledon.
