1.The Indian Medical Council (Amendment) Bill, 2019, was passed by a voice vote in the Lok Sabha which provides for super session of the Medical Council of India for a period of two years with effect from September 26, 2018.  

  • The Bill was introduced by Health Minister Harsh Vardhan to replace an ordinance promulgated on February 21. The government will soon come out with a National Medical Commission (NMC) Bill to usher in comprehensive reforms in the medical education sector.

2.The West Bengal government announced a 10% reservation in government jobs and educational institutions to people belonging to the economically weaker sections (EWS). 

  • The decision was taken at a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. There will be a 10% reservation in government service. 
  • However, those who are already covered under the SC, ST and OBC category will not be eligible. 
  • The decision comes six months after the Narendra Modi government approved a 10% quota in jobs and educational institutions for economically weaker sections (EWS) among general category. 

3.PPFAS Mutual Fund has launched a new scheme- Parag Parikh Tax Saver Fund. It is an open-ended Equity Linked Savings Scheme (ELSS) with a statutory lock-in period of three years. 

  • According to a press release by the fund house, the scheme aims to generate long-term capital appreciation through a diversified portfolio of equity and equity-related securities. The new fund offer opens for subscription on July 4 and closes on July 18 2019. 
  • The minimum initial investment in the scheme will be Rs 500 and multiples of Rs 500 thereafter. The scheme is slated to reopen on July 26. The scheme will be benchmarked against Nifty 500 TRI and will be managed by Rajeev Thakkar, Raunak Onkar and Raj Mehta. 

4.Tokyo’s controversial decision to withdraw from the International Whaling Commission (IWC).

  • With this, Japan joined Iceland and Norway as the only nations to allow commercial whaling despite the IWC moratorium.
  • The last commercial hunt of Japan was in the year 1986.

5.EU leaders have nominated International Monetary Fund chief Christine Lagarde to be the new president of the European Central Bank.  

  • Ms. Lagarde announced she would step down from the global lender.

6.Price Waterhouse & Co Chartered Accountants LLP has quit as Eveready Industries’ auditor, saying it has been unable to obtain sufficient audit evidence of inter-company deposits and its recovery.

  • In its place, Singhi & Co Chartered Accountants has been appointed.
  • While approving the company’s annual financial report, Price Waterhouse & Co had said the holding company had given advances to the tune of Rs 62 crore to a company to get the leasehold rights of a property. 

                      Awards and Recognition

7.The US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF) said that Mastercard CEO and President Ajay Banga and Wipro Chairman Azim Premji will receive the 2019 Global Excellence Awards at its Second Annual Leadership Summit in Washington on July 11.

  • Jared Kushner, senior adviser to the President of the United States, will present awards during the summit.

8. Millions of trees are annually planted across India during the National Festival of Trees Planting (Van Mahotsav) in India. The festival lasts for one week (July 1 to July 7) and it corresponds to the well-known tradition of Arbor Day in other countries.

  • Van Mahotsav was started in India in 1950 by Minister for Agriculture and Food Kanaiyalal Maneklal Munshi. The first seedlings of trees were planted that year. The festival gained national importance, that is why it's held annually from July 1 to July 7. During these first seven days of July millions of trees are planted across all states of India. 


9. Japan officially resumed commercial whaling for the first time in more than three decades after The Department of Sports and Youth Service of the Odisha Government signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI) and Odisha State Table Tennis Association (OSTTA) to host the 21st Commonwealth Championship for the year 2019. It will be held from July 17-22, 2019 at the Jawaharlal Indoor Stadium in Cuttack, Odisha.
