1.As a part of the ongoing Indian Science Congress, 2019, Science Communicators’ Meet was inaugurated by the Union Minister for Law & Justice and Electronics & Information Technology, Shri Ravi Shankar Prasad at Lovely Professional University in Jalandhar.

  • While inaugurating the Meet, Shri Ravi Shankar Prasad was delighted to inform that India’s ranking in global innovation index has jumped from 81st  in 2015 to 60th in 2017.
  • He also informed that India is now at the 6th position in scientific publications and 10th in patent filing. “India is now 3rd most attractive investment destination for technology transactions and it is the best time to do science in India”, said the IT Minister

2.The cyclonic storm ‘PABUK’ over Andaman Sea & neighbourhood moved further west-northwestwards with a speed of 13 kmph in past 06 hours. It lay centered at 14:30 hours IST,on 5th January, 2019 over Andaman Sea & neighbourhood  near latitude 9.5°N and longitude 97.3°E, about 550 km east-southeast of Port Blair.


3.Union Minister for Human Resource Development Shri Prakash Javadekar inaugurated the 27th edition of the New Delhi World Book Fair 2019 at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi


4.Union Minister for Women & Child Development, Smt. Maneka Sanjay Gandhi, in the presence of Minister of State for MWCD, Dr. Virendra Kumar will confer National Awards to 97 Anganwadi Workers(AWWs) for Exceptional Achievements for the year 2017-18, on the 07th of January 2018, in New Delhi.

  • Government of India formulated a scheme for awarding Anganwadi Workers (AWWs) at the National and State Levels in the year 2000-2001.
  • The award is given to motivate the AWWs and recognise their exemplary service in the field of child development and related areas under the ICDS Scheme.  
  • The awards are given annually.  From this year, the cash prize of National Level has been increased from Rs. 25,000 to Rs. 50,000.

5.India and Pakistan exchanged lists of nuclear installations and list of prisoners for the 27th time by diplomatic channels in New Delhi and Islamabad.

  • This was done under the Agreement on the Prohibition of Attack against Nuclear installations that was signed in December 1988 which came into force in January 1991.

6.The Trade Promotion Council of India (TPCI) and union commerce ministry is going to organize a two-day mega food international event, The Indus Food Meet 2019, at the India Exposition Mart of Greater Noida in Uttar Pradesh. The event will conclude on 15th January 2019.


7.The provincial Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government in northwest Pakistan has declared the ancient Hindu religious site of Panj Tirath in the provincial capital Peshawar as national heritage.


8.The three Regional Rural Banks (RRBs) – Punjab Gramin Bank, Malwa Gramin Bank and Sutlej Gramin Bank has been merged into a single RRB by the Government.


9.Vijay Mallya became the first person to be declared a ‘fugitive economic offender’ under Section 12 of the Fugitive Economic Offenders’ Act, 2018 by a special Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) Court in Mumbai.

10.The Water Resources Minister of Andhra Pradesh (AP), Devineni Uma Maheswara Rao received the ‘Central Board of Irrigation and Power Award-2019‘ for better planning and construction of Polavaram Irrigation Project on the Godavari River.

11.The BJP appointed Union Minister J.P. Nadda as Lok Sabha election in-charge for Uttar Pradesh, days after it made similar appointments for 17 States


12.Bandhan Bank announced the resignation of independent director Krishnamurthy V Subramanian and appointed as the chief economic advisor (CEA) to the government.


13.Shri Chhabilendra Roul is appointed the new Secretary, Department of Fertilizers, Ministry of Chemicals & Fertilizers, Government of India

16. Aryna Sabalenka won the Shenzhen open defeating three time finalist Alison Riske

  • This was the Belarusian fifth WTA final in the last 10 months and her first international trophy. The World No. 13 had a breakthrough season last year when she won titles at Wuhan and New Haven
