1.The President of India, Shri Ram Nath Kovind, paid floral tributes to Dr Zakir Hussain, former President of India, on his birth anniversary at Rashtrapati Bhavan on February 8, 2019.


2.Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi visited Jalpaiguri.

He laid the foundation stone for the four laning of the Falakata - Salsalabari section of NH -31 D and inaugurated New High Court Bench.

  • 41.7 km long Falakata - Salsalabari stretch is a part of East - West corridor envisaged under National Highways Development Project (NHDP) Phase II, and is a vital link for connectivity to North East.
  • This project will be completed in 2.5 years on Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer (DBFOT) basis in Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) (Toll) mode of delivery. The project will reduce the distance from Salsalabari and Alipurduar to Siliguri by nearly 50 km.
  • The Circuit bench of Calcutta High Court at Jalpaiguri will provide speedy justice to people of Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri and Cooch Behar in North Bengal. Residents of these four districts will now have to travel less than 100 km to access the bench instead of 600 km trip to Calcutta High Court.

3.The Election Commission of India has launched a Voter Verification and Information Programme (VVIP)  for citizens for verifications of their names, new registrations, changes in the voter details and corrections in the Voter Id Cards for the upcoming General Elections 2019.  

  • ECI has enabled various channels for this VVIP programme. ECI has also set up Contact centers in all districts across India. The Voter Helpline number is 1950.
  • The Contact Centres are equipped with latest information and telecom infrastructure to help the callers.
  • The VVIP Programme was launched during the 2-day intensive Training-cum-Workshop on the use of Information & Communication Technology for the conduct of General Elections 2019.
  • The Training-cum-Workshop was attended by Additional Chief Electoral Officers, Incharge of  IT, Nodal Officers, State Level Master Trainers and technical resource persons from all States and Union Territories.

4.Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully flight tested the second indigenously developed ‘Solid Fuel Ducted Ramjet (SFDR)’ propulsion based missile system from ITR, Chandipur, Odisha.

  • Ground booster, separation of ground booster and Nozzle-less-booster performance were found satisfactory. Missile was guided to high altitude to simulate aircraft release conditions and subsequently nozzle-less-booster was ignited.
  • SFDR based missile accelerated to achieve ramjet Mach number successfully. The trajectory was tracked by telemetry and radar stations till touchdown.

5.INS Trikand, a front-line warship of the Indian Navy, participated in a multinational training exercise ‘CUTLASS EXPRESS – 19’ held from 27 Jan to 06 Feb 19.

  • The aim of the exercise was to improve law enforcement capacity, promote regional security and progress interoperability between the armed forces of the participating nations for the purpose of interdicting illegal maritime activity in the Western Indian Ocean.



6.The 13th Conference of Parties (COP) of the Convention on the conservation of migratory species of wild animals (CMS), an environmental treaty under the aegis of United Nations Environment Programme, is going to be hosted by India during 15th to 22nd February, 2020 at Gandhinagar in Gujarat.

  • Representatives from 129 Parties and eminent conservationists and international NGOs working in the field of wildlife conservation are expected to attend the COP.

7.Shri Ashwini Kumar Choubey, Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare released a communication material comprising First Aid Module for Community, Handbook on Prevention of Accidents and Awareness of First Aid, and a documentary film on the occasion of ‘30th Road Safety Week’ at a function.


8.Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi will launch DD Arunprabha, a dedicated 24x7 Doordarshan satellite channel for Arunachal Pradesh and lay the foundation stone of a permanent campus of Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) at Arunachal Pradesh on 9th February 2019.

  • DD Arunprabha, set to become the 24th satellite channel operated by Doordarshan, will be launched by the Prime Minister at IG Park, Itanagar.
  • It will be equipped with state of the art facilities, including a Digital Satellite News Gathering unit to provide live coverage from remote locations, for 24x7 telecast.
  • The foundation stone of the permanent campus of FTII will be laid by the Prime Minister at Jollang-Rakap (Jote), Papum Pare, Arunachal Pradesh. This is the third Film and Television Institute of Ministry of I&B, the first two being FTII Pune and SRFTI Kolkata. It is the first Film and Television Institute of entire North-East.

9.The India Pavilion at the Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale) 2019 was inaugurated by Mr Matthijs Wouter Knol, Director European Film Market (EFM); Mrs Paramita Tripathi, Deputy Chief of Mission, Embassy of India in Berlin and Mr Peter Domsch, Head of Sales & Technical Department, EFM were also present on the occasion.

  • The poster of IFFI 2019 was also inaugurated by the dignitaries during the inaugural ceremony.

10.Ministry of Textiles, in association with Central Silk Board, is organizing an event, Surging Silk - Accomplishment and way forward, in New Delhi on 9th February 2019.

  • Union Minister of External Affairs, Sushma Swaraj will be the chief guest and the event will be presided over by Union Minister of Textiles, Smriti Zubin Irani.

11.Dr. Mahesh Sharma said that Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and Qutub Minar are among the top 10 Revenue Generating Monuments for 2015-2018.

  • The other monuments in the list are Ellora caves, Sun Temple in Konark, Mamallapuram monuments, Khajuraho monuments, Ajanta caves in Aurangabad, Red Fort.
  • Among all, Taj Mahal and Agra Fort both located in Agra come at the top positions for revenue generation.

12.2nd ASEAN – India Youth Summit concluded in Guwahati which was conducted to strengthen the mutual cooperation among ASEAN countries.

  • It was inaugurated by Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Union Minister of State for Tourism K J Alphons.
  • Nyishi tribe celebrated ‘Boori Boot Yullo festival’ with great enthusiasm to welcome spring and a successful harvest.
  • Nyishi is the largest community in Arunachal Pradesh,found in Daporijo, Upper Subansiri Locale and Raga and Dollungmukh ranges of Lower Subansiri Region of Arunachal Pradesh.

13.Reserve Bank of India has slapped Rs 1 crore penalty on the country’s largest lender,State Bank of India for violation of norms.

14.Father Francois Laborde, a 92-year-old priest, was  conferred with the Legion d’Honneur, the highest civilian award of France, in recognition of his work for specially-abled children in Howrah.

  • He was entitled by the French Ambassador to India, Alexandre Ziegler.

15.Shri Sailesh, IAS, Assam-Meghalaya Cadre,took charge as the Secretary, Ministry of Minority Affairs.

  • He will also  hold the post of Secretary, Department of Official Language.

16.The President of India, Shri Ram Nath Kovind, received the first copy of the book “Law, Justice and Judicial Power – Justice PN Bhagwati’s Approach” from Chief Justice of India, Shri Justice Ranjan Gogoi, who formally released it at a function held in New Delhi on February 8, 2019.

17.Oil industry observed Ujjwala Utsav on 7th February  to celebrate the role of the stakeholders in making Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, a resounding success.

  • This event was organised by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas to encourage and motivate the field force for their contribution to PMUY scheme.
  • During this ceremony,PMUY Anthem was launched which was composed by eminent singer Kailash Kher.                              Sports

19.The 24 year old World champion Manipuri weightlifter Saikhom Mirabai Chanu notched up gold at EGAT Cup in Chiang Mai city, Thailand.

  • Mirabai Chanu has won 48 kg category Gold with effort of 192 kg in the silver level Olympic qualifying event for 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
