Cycling improves your cardiovascular health, strengthens your lower body and helps control your weight, and benefits the environment by reducing pollution and traffic congestion. Unfortunately, cyclists can get injured and killed in accidents, and can hurt themselves by overusing certain joints and muscles. Wearing a helmet is one way to protect yourself and reduces your chance of suffering a head injury while cycling by 85 percent, according to the State of Utah Violence and Injury Prevention Program.
Injuries from Accidents
Only a fraction — possibly as low as 10 percent — of bicycle crashes each year are reported to the police, according to bicyclinginfo.org. In 2009, the number of reported injuries to cyclists was 51,000. Eighty percent of those injured were male. The average age of cyclists injured in motor vehicle crashes was 31. Of those injured, 51 percent were between 25 and 64 and 20 percent were younger than 16. Between 1998 and 2009, there was a 4 percent reduction in bicycle injuries.

Overuse Injuries
Professional cyclists experience overuse injuries, according to a study published in the December 2010 issue of the “American Journal of Sports Medicine.” Of the cycling injuries reported by the participants in the study, which was conducted by the Norwegian School of Sports Sciences in Norway, 45 percent affected the lower back. The next most common injury was to the knee, which represented 23 percent of the injuries. Thirteen percent of the injuries affected the lower leg. Lower back pain caused the highest rates of medical attention and knee injuries were most likely to cause cycling time lost.
Urogenital Disorders
Urogenital disorders are not uncommon for cyclists, according to a review of scientific literature performed by Tel Aviv University in Israel and reported in the December 2005 issue of the medical journal “European Urology.” A urogenital disorder affects the urinary tract and genital areas. The most commonly occurring injury among 50 percent to 91 percent of the cyclists in the reviewed studies was genitalia numbness. Erectile dysfunction presented in 13 to 24 percent of injuries.
