DNA ,the genetic material takes a double helical structure. the main reason is evolution has chosen helical structure as the best possible structure for the most significant molecule of all organisms.
DNA has two strings of polynucleotide running like a railway track with hydrogen bonds between the complementary bases, the length of this molecule is very high and to fold this molecule to fit into the nucleolus of the cells is a difficult task.
The helical form is the only way to overcome these problems – it helps both unwinding of DNA at diifferent regions without affecting the other parts and helps its interactions with the nuclear proteins and always holds the molecule in its compact manner.
