Daulat Ram College

Daulat Ram College is a premier educational institution for women in Delhi, India, founded by an educationist, late Shri Daulat Ram Gupta in 1960. It is a prestigious women’s college engaged in imparting liberal education to women. The college, a large constituent college of the University of the Delhi, originally started as ‘Pramila College” at 22 Tilak Marg, Delhi with 13 members of teaching staff, two office staff and about 350 students. In 1964, the college shifted to its present premises in North Campus, University of Delhi and was re-named as ‘Daulat Ram College‘. The institution has since grown into a full fledged extended college of University of Delhi. The college has acquired a strong identity and has evolved into a prestigious women’s college with its own distinct culture and traditions. It imparts education towards degrees at the Bachelors level in Arts, Science and Commerce. It has seven departments which enroll students at the Masters level and hold M.A. tutorials which supplement the classes held at the respective Departments at the University of Delhi.

The courses in Science were introduced in 1968 which led to the construction of the Science Block and well equipped Science laboratories. The Commerce and M.A. courses in many subjects, as well as new Courses in B.A. (Hons) and B.A. Pass were added subsequently. Further expansion of the college took place with the introduction of B.Sc. (Hons.) in Biochemistry and Chemistry and addition of Nutrition and Health Education (NHE) and Office Management and Secretarial Practice (OMSP) as subjects in the restructured B.A. Pass Course. The latest addition is the introduction of B.Sc. (Hons) in Mathematics from 2009-10. Currently the college is successfully running add-on Certificate, Diploma and Advanced Diploma courses on self financing basis in foreign languages.

The college building which was constructed in the nineteen sixties was further expanded to cater to the growing needs of the expanding college and the rising number of students. A block of tutorial rooms, a modern seminar hall and new class rooms and science laboratories for Physics, N.H.E. and Biochemistry were added with time. Computer laboratories with internet facilities for staff and students are now available. The infrastructure of science laboratories in the college has been recently upgraded with equipment provided by the Delhi University. The college has a well equipped library with over 80,000 titles and subscription to many journals with a computerized data base and access.

The college holds a leading position both in academics and sports. Our students have been winning laurels for the college by consistently securing top ranks in the University of Delhi Annual Examinations. The Department of Physical Education offers facilities for gymnastics, table tennis, athletics and other games. The college had been selected as a training venue for Rugby for the Commonwealth Games, 2010.

Co-curricular activities like various interest clubs, societies, subject associations, the Women’s Development Centre, Eco-club, N.S.S. and N.C.C. are available for the overall development of our students.

To provide an opportunity to old students to connect to their alma mater, the college has an active Alumni Association.

The college student’s hostel with intake capacity of nearly 200 students is one of the best maintained in the University of Delhi and strives to provide not only a home away from home but also the much needed input for all round development of the student. The hostel has been recently renovated during the Commonwealth Games.

The college celebrated its Silver Jubilee year in 1985. As part of the celebrations, seminars, symposia, debates and a number of cultural activities were organized to showcase the achievements of the college. The foundation stone of the College Auditorium was laid as a part of the Silver Jubilee Celebrations. The auditorium with an imposing structure named Sadbhavana Bhavan has a seating capacity of about 1300 and has one of the largest stages in Delhi city. The vibrant mix of co-curricular and extracurricular activities of the college both at the intra-college and inter college levels adds to the strong character of the college as a multidimensional institution. At present the college has 18 departments, over 3200 students on rolls, 163 teaching staff and 98 non-teaching staff.
