NID was established in 1961 and has been a centre for design education, practise and research since then. The Business Week, USA has enlisted NID as one of the top 25 European and Asian programmes in the world. Today NID is claimed as one of the top institutions for Industrial, Communication, Textile and IT Integrated Design. The institute works as an autonomous body under the department of Industrial Policy & Promotion, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India.
The college gives 100% placement every year. Companies visited yet are Maruti Suzuki India Ltd., Renault India Pvt. Ltd., Honda R&D (India) Pvt. Ltd., Ti Cycles of India, Whirlpool of India Ltd. etc.
