Biotechnology

Biotechnology is the applied science that refers to the use of living organisms, as micro-organisms, such as bacteria or yeast and their by-products, such as enzymes, proteins, DNA etc. to produce commercial products. The science mainly makes use of the organisms by manipulating them on the molecular and genetic level to produce certain commercial tools. These tools obtained by the living organisms and bioprocesses are further used in engineering, technology medicine and other fields to be modified for the use of humans for safety, health, nutrition and environment. The various techniques which are used in biotechnology generally involves the manipulation and modification of the organism itself or its subparts/ organs/ organelles (in case of micro-organisms) or various molecules inside them as proteins/ DNA/ RNA/ enzymes to further manipulate/ modify various bioprocesses inside them.Certain well known technologies involved are

ï‚· Recombinant DNA technology, widely used for the treatment of diabetes and jaundice.
ï‚· Cloning, giving birth to dolly the sheep, first mammal to be successfully cloned from an adult cell
ï‚· Gene Therapy, is being viewed as a curing treatment for diseases like cancer and AIDS.
ï‚· DNA fingerprinting, is widely used in forensic sciences, and for the paternity tests.
ï‚· ELISA, a technique on which the entire concept of pregnancy test kits is based.

Various commercial products of biotechnology are widely consumed in the day to day life as well, like the milk, beer, yeast, antibiotics, biodegradable plastics, GM foods etc.
