Microbiology

Microbiology is the study of micro-organisms, the discipline studies the growth, characteristics, lifecycle, and various other aspects related to these micro-organisms, which are invisible to the naked eye, and are majorly protozoans, algae, fungi, bacteria and viruses. These micro-organisms are found everywhere, and hence microbiologists mainly study them as well as their interaction with their external environment, i.e. their impact on the life of humans as well other organisms. The life of most of the organisms on this earth is very highly dependent on these micro-organisms, for all the positive and negative reasons as well. This includes the disease causing/ pathogenic micro-organisms ,and their impact on human health, plants and other animals. While, there are some other micro-organisms, which are very positively required in the food and health care industry, as fermenting agents, or as vaccines etc.

Microbiologists are majorly researchers, who study the micro-organisms, and their interactions with the environment as mentioned earlier. Various sub-categories of these researches are:

Medical microbiologists: study the disease causing / pathogenic micro-organisms, the mechanism or process, by which they induce the disease, and the ways to cure and prevent these diseases. Vaccinations and other cures for various diseases have already been discovered, and the present studies continue to eliminate various dreadful diseases as AIDS.
Veterinary microbiologists: study the pathogenic impact of micro-organisms on animals, and their cure.
Agriculture microbiologists: studies the role of micro-organisms in improving the shape and size of plants, the pathogenic impact on plants, its prevention and cure, in increasing the soil fertility and spoilage of farm- products.
Industrial microbiologists: helps in the manufacturing of commercial products such as antibiotics, alcoholic beverages, and other yeast based products, amino acids, citric acids etc.
Food industry: they work with the organizations as FDA (food and drug administration), and deptt. Of agriculture, and they ensure that the food which is being supplied to various retail organization are free of pathogenic microorganisms or not, hence rendering the food being safe or unsafe for general consumption.
Environmental microbiologists: studies the role and interaction of various micro-organisms due to pollution, season change, evolution, and general impact on plants and animals.

The scope for microbiologists is more in developed countries like US, UK, Australia, France and Germany. In these countries, one who is engaged in research work gets around $30,000 to $70,000 per year.

Scholars of microbiology can opt for any of the above mentioned career path, and apart from them, they may opt their career as an immunologist, bacteriologist, mycologist, protozoologists, biochemist, cell biologists, parasitologist, virologist etc.

They may also work as an academician, as a science writer etc.

For microbiology study you needs to have passed 10+2 in science with 50% or equivalent CGPA (physics, chemistry and biology as subjects) or equivalent.
Some institutes have Entrance examination for admission.
